They play more than just basketball and baseball in Teutopolis.

They also play tennis.

And they play it very well.

The Wooden Shoes made a fine showing in the IHSA State Tournament, finishing ninth overall in the team standings in a field of approximately 60 teams. THS ended with 11 team points. Chicago (University) and Normal (University) tied for the team championship with 28 points and Chicago (Latin) had 27 points.

“I was so proud of how well the guys played over the weekend,” said THS coach Michael Vogt. “Finishing ninth as a team in the state tournament is an exceptional result when you consider that some of the schools we were up against are three to four times the size of us. It was really a great way to finish what has been a great season for these guys.”

Kyele Mossman played seven singles matches over three days, going 5-2 overall and tying for ninth place. The doubles teams of Logan Waldhoff/Alex Deters and Seth Probst/Alex Probst also played well.

Mossman split his first two matches. He defeated Evan Fedin (North Shore Country Day) 6-2, 6-2, but was then defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Alex Bergendorf (Glenbard South).

Mossman then strung together four straight wins – 6-1, 6-0 over Raymond Richardson (Chicago De La Salle); 6-1, 6-1 over Joey Miller (Rock Island Alleman); 7-6, 6-4 over Carlos Gutierrez (Oak Park Fenwick); and 6-3, 6-1 over Kyle Boudreau (Antioch). He was then defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Michael Rooney (Nazareth Academy) in the consolation quarterfinals.

“Kyele beat some really good players during the tournament,” Vogt said. “Making it to the third day of the state tournament is quite an accomplishment, especially as a junior.”

The Probst doubles team was 3-2 overall. They opened with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win over Krishna Subbiah/Arjun Tangella (Urbana University) and then dropped a 6-1- 6-2 decision to Sam Taluc/Barik Olden (Morton).

The duo won their next two matches – 6-2, 6-3 over Sean Froidcouer/Jaden Henderson (Troy Triad); and 6-0, 1-6, 10-2 over Nikhil Mangtani/Matt Nguyen (Vernon Hills). In their final match, they lost 6-2, 6-1 to Thomas Moh/Mason Runkel (Normal University).

“Alex and Seth played really well,” Vogt noted. “It was nice to see Alex have such success during his senior season. Seth really stepped up his game late in the season. He will be a really strong player for us next year.”

The Waldhoff/Deters team finished 1-2 overall. They lost their opener, 6-0, 6-0, to Andy Hinch/Joe Demirjian (Mt. Zion); bounced back to win 6-4, 6-3 over Grayson Smith/Trevor Beale (Rockford Christian); and was then defeated 6-4, 3-6, 3-10 by Ryahei Matsubara/Hayden Holloway (Herrin).

“This was Logan and Alex’s first state tournament appearance, but you couldn’t tell,” Vogt said. “They had to play against a team from Mt. Zion in the first round that went on to get third place. But they bounced right back with a win and almost took down a very good team from Herrin.

“I was really proud of how all these kids played.”
