Charles Robert Martin, of Dieterich, passed away at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Funeral services celebrating Charlie’s life were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, at the Meyer Funeral Home in Dieterich, with Mike Elliott and Nate Hagen officiating. Interment was in the Dieterich Village Cemetery in Dieterich. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at the funeral home.

Charles Robert, better known as Charlie, was born on February 27, 1936, in Dieterich, the son of Arthur G. and Dancil I. (Sparling) Martin. He married Lynn Scaggs on January 23, 1965, at Gays Christian Church in Gays.
Charlie worked at Schultz Turf and Forage for over 50 years. He was a member of the Dieterich Christian Church and attended the Latona Church of Christ. Charlie was a volunteer firefighter for the Dieterich Fire Department for 35 years and served on the Village of Dieterich board for 4 years.
Charlie enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Fighting Illini fan and for many years, Charlie coached Little League baseball.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lynn Martin, of Dieterich; children, Gordon (Laura) Martin, of Effingham; Amy Martin (Todd Hewing), of Greenup; Charlie “Bill” (Amy) Martin, of Dieterich; and Ross (Jayme) Martin, of Dieterich; grandchildren, Allen Martin, Kyla Schreier, Alex Martin, Thomas Martin, James Martin, Chase Martin and Madelyn Martin; great-granddaughter, Lillian Jo Gasper; and sisters, Verna (Tom) Tillman, of Shelbyville; and Carolyn Settles, of Mattoon.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Kolten Lee Gasper; and a sister, Genevie Peebles.
