John A. Hoene, 96, of Neoga, formerly of Sigel and Effingham, passed away at 7:43 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, in the Heartland Christian Village of Neoga.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the St. Michael the Archangel Church of Sigel, with the Rev. Fr. Sunder Ery officiating. Visitation for relatives and friends were held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, at the church with a K of C Rosary at 7:30 p.m. by the Sigel Knights of Columbus. Burial was in the St. Michael Cemetery of Sigel, with military services conducted by the Sigel American Legion.
The Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home of Neoga is in charge of arrangements.

In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the St. Michael School of Sigel, or to the donor's choice.
Mr. Hoene was born October 8, 1920, in Sigel, the son of John and Christine (Will) Hoene. He married Ruth Pruemer on May 11, 1949, in Teutopolis.
John was a retired farmer and a member of the St. Michael the Archangel Church of Sigel. He also served as a Staff Sargent in the United States Air Force during World War II.
John served on the Board of Directors of Effingham Equity for 25 years. He was still driving the combine at the age of 88. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Sigel American Legion, both of Sigel, and served on numerous church and school boards.
Mr. Hoene is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Hoene, of Neoga; five children, Ken Hoene, and wife Dawn, of rural Shelbyville; Joe Hoene, and wife Jeanne, of Sigel; Mary Hoene and fiancé Art Wente, of Effingham; Paul Hoene, and wife Martha, of Sigel; and Mark Hoene, and wife Joyce, of Stewardson; and 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tom Hoene; one grandson, Tyler Hoene; three brothers, Alphonse Hoene, Norbert Hoene and Raymond Hoene; four sisters, Ann Bushur, Rose Koester, Thresa Hartke and Eleanor Fuesting.
